App Downloads to Overtake iTunes Music Downloads
Apple was a large part of the music revolution in the last decade, and its latest revolution, apps, is likely to eclipse its previous success.
Market research firm Asymco reports that very soon the number of app downloads will surpass the number of music downloads in Apple's iTunes Store. What's more, it will do so in half the time it took iTunes sales to get to their current state.
This milestone is projected to happen by the end of the year. In a little over two years, users have downloaded 6.3 billion apps, whereas it took Apple five years to reach the same number of music downloads.
It's important to keep in mind that over 80 percent of the apps in the Apple App Store are free, whereas songs generally aren't. Of course, that hasn't stopped millions of people from buying apps at an exponential rate either.
