Pioneer Launches Affordable DJ Headphones
![]() |
Pioneer today introduced its HDJ-500 DJ headphones with styling and performance similar to its pro headphones. The cost difference? About 20 percent of the pro suggested retail price.
At $125, the headphones are affordable for the casual or novice DJ compared to $600 for the pro HDJ-2000 model.
Specifications for the entry level headphones, including frequency range, output sound level and driver unit are similar for both models, and accessories are identical. The real differences lie in power input with the 2000 mW maximum input for the HDJ-500 compared with 3,500 mW for the HD-2000 and impedance at 45 Ohm versus 36 Ohm. The rule of thumb is the higher the Ohm, the more difficult it is to achieve a louder sound.
The HDJ-500 provides clear audio reproduction, especially in the critical low and mid frequency ranges that are key for remixing, by combining 40-millimeter diameter drivers, a 19-micrometer thick diaphragm and a copper clad aluminum wire voice coil, according to Pioneer. Snare and kick drum sounds are more clear making it easier for novice DJs to match the tempo of tracks.
For maximum flexibility during performances, the HDJ-500 has a rotating arm structure that allows the user to rotate the right earpiece forward and back by as much as 60 degrees ―30 degrees short of the pro version ― but still enough for the DJ to hear full audio and the crowd at the same time.
The headphones include two interchangeable cords providing freedom of movement during performances. Like the pro version, the 1.2 meter coiled cord that can be extended to 3 meters, is perfect for regular DJ performances, while the one meter straight cord is ideal for leisure listening.
Black and red models will be available November 2010, but you'll have to wait until January for white ones. Price $125.
