The laptop with rotating screen that transforms into pseudo-tablet is not a new idea, but it's never been done quite like this. Today Dell announced the Inspiron Duo, a 10-inch netbook that transforms into an iPad-like tablet.
At the Intel Developer Forum 2010 conference keynote, Dell unveiled their latest tablet concept with a bit of a surprise. A representative brought out what looked like a red tablet, perhaps slightly thicker than the iPad.
"There are times that you have to do work. Tablets are great for entertainment , but they aren't exactly conducive to productivity," the representative said before opening it up and rotating the screen to reveal it was also a full netbook with keyboard.
Instead of swiveling sideways on a special hinge, like most laptop-cum-tablet designs , the Inspiron Duo screen rotates top-over-bottom on two rotation points inside the frame of the screen.
The netbook includes the latest Intel Atom N550 processor and runs Windows 7 Home Premium . Obviously the screen is touch sensitive and receives touch input in both the tablet and netbook configurations.
Other details are scarce for the moment, but Dell has said this Inspiron Duo will be available by the end of the year.
