PS3 Gets Disc-Free Netflix Movie Streaming and Surround Sound
Things just got a bit easier for PlayStation 3 owners who also have a Netflix subscription. Starting October 18, the PS3 will be able to stream Netflix Instant Watch movies and shows without a disc.
Previously, PS3 owners had to use a special disc with the requisite software, but the new update makes it possible to stream content without it. That includes the latest features from Netflix, including high definition 1080i content with 5.1-channel surround sound courtesy of Dolby Digital Plus.
When the feature goes live next week, users will find a new Netflix app in the video category of the PS3 media bar. Anyone with a Netflix subscription can use that app to access streaming content.
The interface gets a nice retouching in the update as well. Sony says the interface "brings a much richer and faster browsing experience, content search directly on the device, and dramatic improvements in how fast playback starts."
