iTunes Song Previews Extending to 90 Seconds Whether Labels Like It or Not
Apple has taken the initiative in deciding how iTunes will promote music, informing music labels that song previews in the iTunes Store will be extended from 30 to 90 seconds, whether the labels like it or not.
Apple sent out an email to this effect recently, positing that "giving potential customers more time to listen to your music will lead to more purchases." The email explicitly states the terms of the agreement the labels are entering into without seeking confirmation that the labels even want the changes.
It remains to be seen how they react.
Song previews will only extend to 90 seconds on songs that are longer than 2 minutes 30 seconds, so don’t expect to listen to entire short tracks for free on iTunes . Shorter songs will still have 30 second previews.
