Jaw-Dropping Sound from Jawbone's New Jambox
Jawbone of Bluetooth headset fame, today unveiled its Jambox, a compact, virtually indestructible wireless speaker block that works with any Bluetooth, 3.5mm stereo input, or micro-USB device including iPhones and iPads.
While music is its most obvious use, the Jambox is a companion to movies and video games to amp up the sound for two or more to enjoy. Jawbone can also be used as a speakerphone for hands-free chats and conference calls.
Jambox is preloaded with Jawbone's MyTalk firmware, so the speakers can be used with MyTalk's apps such as text to voice, email to voice and VoIP calling in conjunction with a computer.
Jambox has an output capacity of 85 decibels, the magic number at which anything louder is deemed dangerous. The booming bass is the product of some very clever engineering, Hosain Rahman, Jawbone's CEO told Co. Design. The company uses the battery of the device like a speaker cone.
"See, the battery is the heaviest element inside the device. Since it's relatively heavy, it can push a lot of air when it vibrates, just like a big speaker cone usually would," Rahman said. "So the engineers placed the battery on a rubber diaphragm. Thus, the battery becomes an actual moving element of the speaker, driving bass."
The Jambox is available now for pre-order, for $199, and will be available at Apple Stores and Best Buy outlets starting November 16.
