Scuttlebutt has it that Facebook will launch its Project Titan email service at an event scheduled for Monday in San Francisco.
Dubbed the "Gmail killer" internally at Facebook , in reference to Google's wildly popular email client, Project Titan has been in the works for months, according to various blogs.
It will likely leverage and integrate the things that Facebook does so well – photos , event announcements and yes, of course, basic social networking (it knows who your friends are) – with email services.
Project Titan will reportedly offer "@facebook.com" personal email addresses with the account holder's vanity URL in front.
Given the half a billion Facebook users who might enjoy having their online social media identities tied in to their daily emailing, Google – which has about 200 million Gmail users – might well be quaking in its boots.
The two mega-companies have been sniping at each other recently over access to user contact information. Clash of the titans, indeed.
