Netflix Coming to Some Android Phones Next Year
Netflix has expanded to just about every device and service out there, so it may seem unusual that Android phones still don't have Netflix access. That's about to change, though.
Netflix has announced that it will be available through "select Android devices" early in 2011.
So why has it taken this long and is only coming to a few unspecified handsets? Netflix explains:
"The hurdle has been the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android," read the company blog. Netflix has simply been worried that piracy would be too easy on Android.
The company will have to work with device manufacturers specifically to create security measures in each phone the movie studios can accept. Netflix promises that a complete solution for any Android device will be available sometime in the future but didn't specify when. Until then, individual Android phones will be marketed as Netflix compatible .
