Supercomputers have come a long way since the 1960s when the first ones were introduced.
Today an iPad's graphics processing unit (GPU) bests the performance of supercomputers of the early 1990s. And high-end graphics units available for desktop computers can reach the performance of supercomputers of the late 1990s.
The next major goal of computer engineers is to build a so-called exoscale supercomputer that is 50 to 100 times faster than the current record holder.
