Last week, the FBI issued a warning to its field agents that sexual predators could use a new model of Barbie doll with a built-in video camera to shoot child pornography, reported a number of news outlets who received leaked copies of the internal FBI memo. The Feds didn't indicate that anyone has actually tried to shoot illicit video with the doll, which hit stores in July.
The Video Girl Barbie has cameras in its eyes, allowing kids to shoot "doll's-eye-view" video, and then play it back on a small screen on Barbie's back. Some parents have reacted with calls for retraction of the doll, and even set up a website in an attempt to get it pulled off the shelves.
Mattel, the company that manufactures Barbie dolls, highlighted the fact that no one has reported any incidents of misuse involving the doll, and told Reuters, "Mattel products are designed with children and their best interests in mind. Many of Mattel's employees are parents themselves and we understand the importance of child safety -- it is our No. 1 priority."
