Move over, "Mortal Kombat." Make room for "The Last Barfighter."
An innovative new arcade game actually rewards players for winning match-ups. Not in tokens – rather, in beer.
A promotional device for Raleigh, NC-based Big Boss Brewing Company, the Beercade is an arcade-sized cabinet that houses a fighting game featuring characters on the brewer's labels, including Hell's Belle, Bad Penny, Angry Angel, Blanco Diablo and High Roller. It's built in the same manner as traditional arcade machines, with a wood cabinet, illustrated images on the sides and a lit marquee sign. But when players step up to the machine, they place their cups underneath two installed beer taps (where coin slots would go on a traditional arcade machine), and then take part in a match.
Inspired by the 80's movie "The Last Starfighter" (itself based on an arcade game), "The Last Barfighter" features traditional fighting action along the same lines of "Street Fighter" or "Mortal Kombat." Each character has an assortment of punches and kicks, as well as special moves that range from traditional fireballs to more unique maneuvers, including unicorn horn impaling and butt slaps. (Yes, really.)
After a winner emerges in the best of three rounds, they're then rewarded by having their cup filled with one, one of Big Boss' specialty brews.
The maker of "Last Barfighter," the McKinney Ten Percent agency, doesn't have a release date or touring schedule for the machine as of yet, but according to the press release, it plans on "featuring 'The Last Barfighter' at events that help raise funds and awareness for our charitable partners in the communities we serve."
