Redditors made their own Cinderella story today (April 12) as one cash-strapped high school senior received enough donations from fellow Redditors to attend his prom in style.
CheeseBurrito, as he is known on Reddit, asked Redditors for fashion advice, mentioning he'd worked out a 50/50 split with his parents to cover the cost of a new suit and accessories. His earnest post was applauded by a user who said, "People, THIS is how you ask for advice. Thank you for being so thorough."
"I've already tried convincing my mother that the suits are probably going to last longer and fit better if I buy them from a higher end store, but she won't really have any of it," CheeseBurrito wrote in his original post under Reddit's topic Male Fashion Advice.
CheeseBurrito got plenty of fashion advice. Redditors nixed his idea of a skinny black tie and suggested one with a stripe that would complement his date's pink dress. As for brown or black shoes, opinion was divided. Many Redditors suggested stores where he could get a good quality suit to fit his budget.
But in the course of about 24 hours, the young man also received at least $1,000 for his big event (a donor list was later removed).
It all started with one Redditor who wrote, "As a former broke ass high-school kid myself, if OP [original poster] were to PM me I would be willing to donate $50 to the cause." Another Redditor said he would match the total amount of money donated.
Why so generous? Redditors have a history of generosity . The original prom donor said, "In the words of (imho) the most best reddit post ever: Today you, tomorrow me."
CheeseBurrito wrote he will give any of the leftover money to someone who needs it.
