If Saturday morning you tore through layers of wrapping paper to discover that Santa left you a new Kindle eReader, you are not alone. According to Amazon.com, their newest version of the Kindle has surpassed the final Harry Potter book, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and the Bible as the single most popular product in the history of the website. This news tops off a monumental holiday season for the online retailer, which broke records across the board.
According to Amazon, the most popular book bought for the Kindle on Christmas day itself was "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," although "The Confession: A Novel" by John Grisham, "Decision Points" by George Bush and "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand were the most-purchased eReader books over the entire holiday season. In the movie category, the biggest sellers were Inception, Toy Story 3 and the Blind Side. Over in music, the top selling MP3s of the year belong to Kayne West and Kid Rock, which confirms the rumor that Mr. Rock is both alive and still producing new music.
On it's peak sales day this year, November 29th, Amazon.com sold 13.7 million items , or approximately 158 sales per second. While Kindle purchases made up the single largest portion of those sales, Amazon also moved so many pairs of jeans that a stack of the folded pants would reach to the top of Mount Everest. Additionally, the web store sold more razors than the average adult male has hairs on his head.
Not bad for a company that didn't turn a profit for its first six years in business.
