It has been long rumored that Amazon would make e-books on its popular Kindle e-reader device available for "loaning" -- and that day has finally come.
The e-commerce giant announced on Thursday (Dec. 30) that eligible Kindle books can be loaned to a friend or family member once for a period of 14 days. While a book is loaned out, the owner will be unable to read it.
The borrower also doesn’t have to own Amazon's Kindle device . Borrowed books can also be read using Amazon's free Kindle app for PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android devices.
Barnes & Noble's Nook ereader device already has loaning capabilities built in.
