Port Existing Phone Number to Google Voice for $20
It's back again, but this time it's official. Google will allow users to port their phone number to a Google Voice account for $20.
Reports began to flow in last week saying Google Voice could port existing numbers, but Google shut it down because it wasn't completely ready. Now the search giant has officially unveiled the service for a fee.
Users can port over any phone number , though it means canceling the existing service contracts for the number (which in many cases will incur an early-termination fee). For now, it is only available to current Google Voice users. That means that those who start a new one now won't have access to this feature. Google said new accounts will have access to number porting in the "next few weeks."
Porting a number to Google Voice can open up many options, especially for landlines. Users can easily forward the calls to any other phone, and it runs over an Internet connection. In many cases, it may be a way for frugal consumers to save on phone bills.
