The purportedly "most powerful smartphone in the world" now has an official release date and price. The Motorola Atrix 4G will launch on the AT&T network on March 6 for $200.
AT&T made it official today, also announcing that it will begin taking preorders for the Atrix 4G on Feb. 13.
The pricing falls in line with previous rumors. It will be discounted through third-party retailers , but remain $200 with a two-year contract when purchased through AT&T.
AT&T also mentioned that the phone may launch earlier than March 6, but declined to give further information.
In the wake of losing iPhone exclusivity, the Motorola Atrix 4G is AT&T's next play at having a super phone. It has a powerful dual-core processor and more memory than any other phone will when it launches. In fact, it's powerful enough that Motorola is making a dock for it that includes a laptop screen and keyboard. When connected, it works like a laptop, but one that runs through the phone. A special multimedia dock will also allow the phone to run apps on desktop computers.
While the laptop dock will be available in a bundle deal, it won't be cheap. AT&T priced the phone and laptop dock bundle at $500 on contract. While the technology certainly is impressive, one could still buy the phone and a nice netbook for the same price. Even worse, the bundle deal isn't going to last forever. Those who don't get the bundle when it launches will have to pay a full $500 for the laptop dock later, even if they already bought the phone.
Purchasing the phone also means agreeing to a mandatory tethering data plan. That's $20 on top of the $30 for the Data Pro plan (2GB of data per month).
So while it may be powerful and impressive, the Motorola Atrix 4G certainly won't be cheap.
