Those waiting patiently for the fabled PlayStation Phone to become reality are one step closer to their goal. Sony has officially unveiled the Sony Xperia Play along with an impressive spec sheet.
"Today is a very proud moment for Sony Ericsson as we bring something truly revolutionary to the market. Living up to our vision of Communication Entertainment, Xperia Play will forever change the way people think about smartphones and mobile gaming," said Rikko Sakaguchi, executive vice president of Sony Ericsson, in a statement.
It's not that the Xperia Play is a very well-kept secret , but the official announcement contains some interesting facts.
The Xperia Play will run on the latest version of Android for smartphones, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, on a 1GHz Scorpion processor with built-in Adreno 205 graphics chip (a must for high-quality gaming). This hardware is supposed to make the Xperia Play capable of 60 frames per second on high-end games, Sony says.
As shown in previous image leaks, the display is 4 inches (854 by 480 pixel resolution) and mounted on a slider that pops the controls out from underneath.
The phone also comes with an 8GB microSD card for storage and 400MB of memory. Also included is a 5 megapixel camera, stereo speakers, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Sony says the Xperia Play will come preloaded with a "legendary" title from the original PlayStation console , along with popular Android games such as Asphalt 6, The Sims 3 and Tetris. There will be 50 additional titles, from 20 publishing partners, available at launch. Multiplayer gaming will be possible by turning the Xperia Play into a Wi-Fi hot spot that other Play owners can connect to.
The Xperia Play will officially launch in March, although Sony Ericsson has specified that it will come to Verizon in "early spring," meaning there may be a different launch date for the United States.
