Target Launches Scannable Mobile Coupon Program
Target has become the first national retailer to offer a scannable mobile coupon program that lets shoppers take advantage of exclusive deals simply by letting the cashier scan a barcode on their mobile phone .
"At Target, we know that mobile phones are an integral part of our guests' lives, and mobile coupons are just another way we're providing convenient, on-the-go shopping solutions," said Steve Eastman, president of Target.com, in a company press release.
Customers can opt into the program on a computer or smartphone Web Browser, or by sending a special text message to Target. Once enrolled in the program, users receive a text message with a link to a special mobile Web page with a single barcode and several exclusive deals. Scanning that barcode at checkout lets the customer use any or all of those deals.
Target is rolling out this program to all of its stores and says the deals will rotate regularly. Because the barcode resides on a Web page, customers will need to have a phone capable of browsing the Web in order to use the coupon.
