Motorola to Launch 7-Inch Tablet This Year
Despite backlash over the price, the Motorola Xoom seems to be the Android tablet to beat at the moment. And Motorola is already hard at work on its little brother — a 7-inch tablet.
Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha revealed the new tablet plans at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in San Francisco yesterday (Feb. 28).
"There will be 7-inch, some version of 8-inch, some version of 10-, 11- and 12-inch tablets," Jha said, though he specified Motorola won't be producing some of those sizes. Motorola plans to produce a 7-inch tablet soon, though, and "will have other tablets out by the end of the year."
The 7-inch and 10-inch tablet sizes seem to be the most highly favored among tablet makers right now. The Motorola Xoom is a 10-inch tablet, so it's not surprising that the company also wants to expand into the smaller tablet market. Right now, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is the only major 7-inch tablet on the market, but many other manufacturers, including Dell and ASUS, plan to release 7-inch tablets this year.
Jha did not give a specific release date or price range for its smaller tablet, but many experts hope the smaller screen size will significantly decrease the price compared to the $800 Xoom.
