Motorola Xoom Might Be $539 at Sam's Club
The long and convoluted saga of the Motorola Xoom price tag just presented a new twist to the story. Tipsters have evidence that Motorola's Honeycomb tablet will retail for $539 at Sam's Club.
Images sent in to Android fan site Droid-Life clearly show the Motorola Xoom listed at an unprecedented (for the Xoom) low price: $539. To be clear, this is the Wi-Fi-only version, not the 3G version being sold at Verizon. But if you didn't want a data contract anyway, this is an exciting announcement.
After many rumors, Motorola originally announced the Xoom would be $800 , which is approximately the price of a nice laptop. Consumers balked and experts shook their heads. Recently, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha announced that Verizon would subsidize that price down to $600 with a contract , which is better, but still not great. So $539 with no strings attached is a considerably more attractive proposition for many consumers. It's less expensive than a comparable iPad (32GB Wi-Fi-only for $600).
It's not clear if this is a Sam's Club-specific promotion because there is no official word of this pricing from either Sam's Club or Motorola. The 3G Xoom is currently available, but the Wi-Fi-only version doesn't have an official release date. Industry rumblings indicate it will likely be in April.
