Craigslist Founder Launches Site for Nonprofits
The founder of Craigslist has launched a new site called craigconnects where non profits and charities can connect with individuals seeking to offer help. Via the site, the organizations can also meet up, make connections and work together.
Craig Newmark – who founded the online classifieds site Craigslist.org 16 years ago – said he plans to spend 20 years working on craigconnects.org to help bring people together to better communities worldwide. The move is a part of an effort to draw attention to companies that aim to make a difference across the globe.
"I hope craigconnects connect individuals and philanthropies across the world in increasingly large numbers, both directly and indirectly," Newmark told TechNewsDaily. "I'd like to see those connections in the millions in the next few years and in 20 years, around seven or so billion."
The site is currently divided into different areas of focus, including community service efforts, volunteering, veterans' issues, social progress and helping economic growth in the Middle East .
"The users don't decide what organizations are featured on the site, I do," Newmark said. "I ask users to nominate organizations that are doing good stuff and then vet them as carefully as I can, relying on review sites such as CharityNavigator and GreatNonprofits.org."
"I didn’t feel like it was my duty to start a site like this, it just felt like the right thing for me to do personally," Newmark added.
