There have arguably been fewer sightings of Elvis over this past year than glimpses of a white iPhone 4. Now according to an Apple executive via Twitter – and bizarrely in response to a 16-year-old kid named Eric, who does not appear to frequently use the micro-blogging service – a white version of the smartphone will in fact hit shelves this spring.
"The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!)," wrote Phil Schiller, Apple's vice president of worldwide product marketing, on Twitter . An editor at the electronics and gadget site Engadget was tipped off about the exchange and blogged about it.
Apple had promised the white handset last summer after initially releasing the iPhone 4 in black. Yet Apple ended up having to cite various technical difficulties in getting the phone out the door as the post-launch months dragged on, and an Apple spokesperson in October said the phone wouldn't see the light of day until spring.
In lieu of any further official word, more hints that Apple still had the twinkle of a white iPhone in its eye have kept popping up. When the iPhone came to the Verizon network in January of this year, for example, obsessed techies noticed a white iPhone in Verizon's online store , though this proverbial white whale quickly vanished from the website.
With an expected rollout of the iPhone 5 this summer, the hour might seem a bit late for Apple to still bother with the production of a white iPhone 4.
But older generations of the iPhone still do sell reasonably well, and given the flurry of attention that rumors of the white iPhone 4 have received online, it's fair to say that there is genuine pent-up demand out there for it; much like the wishful thinking that the king of rock and roll isn't dead.
