Calls to Japan Now Free on AT&T, Verizon
In an effort to help people in America contact loved ones affected by the recent Japanese earthquakes and tsunami, both AT&T and Verizon have announced that calls to Japan will be free.
AT&T made the announcement first, stating that both wireless and landline calls to Japan will be free through March 31.
"We want to help our customers connect with loved ones in Japan in any way we can," said Mark Collins, senior vice president at AT&T. "Connecting with family and friends is most important at times like this; we want to make it as easy and worry-free as possible for our customers."
Verizon followed suit, making all calls to Japan free through April 10. Verizon went one step further by making all text and multimedia messaging to Japan free during the same period. In addition, Verizon FiOS TV subscribers will receive free access to the TV Japan channel through March 17.
