Wi-Fi-Only Motorola Xoom Will Launch March 27
The Motorola Xoom Android tablet has been available only in a 3G version, until now. Motorola announced a Wi-Fi-only Xoom will go on sale March 27 for $599.
"We are now continuing to expand the choices available to consumers with the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi to be available soon from numerous leading retailers in the United States," said Dan Papalia, vice president of retail sales for Motorola Mobility.
Many consumers and experts alike were dismayed at the launch of the Motorola Xoom because there was only one version to choose from and it was $800. The new Wi-Fi Xoom offers an alternative that is much more competitively priced. It's the same price as an iPad 2, with identical storage and connectivity.
Aside from a lack of 3G connectivity, the Wi-Fi Xoom is identical to the 3G Xoom , including the Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, 32GB of storage, 10-inch display, 1GB of RAM and 1GHz processor.
The Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi will sell for $599 at Amazon.com, Best Buy, Costco, RadioShack, Staples, Walmart and some Sam's Club stores. Because it does not have a 3G connection, it does not require a data contract with Verizon like the 3G version does.
