For anyone who has ever experienced the inevitable sticker shock when it came time to purchase one of the Adobe Creative Suite's packages, there is welcome news. Adobe has developed a new subscription program that allows users to rent individual programs or the whole package for greatly reduced prices.
According to Adobe's website, the program works the same as if you buy the product. The programs "are installed on your computer and provide all the same features and functionality."
The programs can either be rented in one year blocks, with monthly prices that range from $19 to $49 or if you don't need the programs for more than a few months, you can rent them on a month to month basis, for slightly higher prices.
Inconveniently, there is no rent to own aspect to the program, so you won't be able to take advantage of reduced upgrade rates. A report from Switched stated that Adobe "simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it's actually the same cost as buying it outright."
So while the rental program may not be ideal for heavy users, it would be beneficial for small businesses, freelancers, or students who may need the program for a project or two and can't afford to buy them in the first place.
