Apple and Verizon to Deliver Wireless i0S Updates This Fall
As iPhone users can attest, having to plug in your handset to download the latest update is a pain. After all, why should we iOS users be chained to our computers when those with Android and webOS phones enjoy over-the-air updates? Well, according to 9to5Mac, starting this fall, Verizon Wireless customers can ditch the USB cable and get updates directly on their iPhones.
Computer-free iPhone updates will reportedly debut in iOS 5. Apple and Verizon have reportedly been in talks over implementing wireless updates since early this year. It’s not clear if similar negotiations are underway with AT&T and international iPhone carriers, not to mention whether the over-the-air updates will be available on the iPad and iPod touch.
9to5Mac notes that iOS updates are currently 600MB in size, meaning Apple would have to decrease their size in order to get carriers to agree to push them over the air. Furthermore, we can likely expect a Cloud-based backup system to serve the function of iTunes’ update backups.
