The Nintendo DS has undergone several iterations since it debuted in 2004. The latest version, the Nintendo DSi XL, will be available this week and already Nintendo is teasing the next evolution in the DS line: 3-D.
Nintendo announced it will show off the Nintendo 3DS portable console at the E3 gaming expo this June. According to Nintendo, the 3DS will have a 3-D-capable screen that does not require 3-D glasses to view. That's certainly exciting news, although the company didn't explain how this will be accomplished.
3-D gaming is already a goal for many game publishers and console manufacturers as the industry looks for ways to capitalize on excitement over 3-D content. This move makes sense for Nintendo because the DS has been one of the largest forces in handheld gaming . If the company can stay ahead of the competition, such as the PlayStation Portable, in the 3-D race the company stands to profit.
Nintendo also said the 3DS would go on sale some time before March 2011, and the console will be backwards compatible with original Nintendo DS and DSi games . Japanese newspaper Nikkei reports the 3DS will also have improvements in Wi-Fi and battery capacity. Nikkei also reports the 3DS will sport 3-D control sticks, although it's unclear what exactly that entails.
