Time Warner Cable Offers Free Wi-Fi to New Yorkers
Time Warner Cable made a surprising announcement today, revealing that New York City subscribers to its service were now eligible to use thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots around the New York area for free.
Time Warner Cable struck a deal with Cablevision, a service provider behind Optimum-branded hotspots, to allow Time Warner Road Runner subscribers to access the Internet for free at Cablevision hotspots . This includes shops, parks and rail stations all over the city.
This move only applies to New York City customers for now, but it brings up the possibility of additional Internet-access deals being available for other customers. As wireless Internet access becomes more and more standard in everyday life, many service providers may start offering free Wi-Fi deals like this as a bonus for their service.
It makes sense, too, now that people are accessing the Web more from outside their homes than ever before. Paying for Internet access at home would be much more enticing if the subscription also included access to thousands of hotspots in the surrounding area, negating the need pay additional fees for access when away from home .
