Smart TVs to Overtake Game Consoles
Internet-connected or "smart" TVs are expected to outsell game consoles this year, according to a report from Informa Telecoms & Media.
Connected TVs will outsell game consoles by 41 percent, which translates to 52 million TVs compared to 37 million game consoles.
Smart TVs bring some pieces of the Internet right into the TV via built-in apps without having to hook up an additional piece of equipment such as a such as a settop box, a computer or a game console to deliver an Internet connection.
Samsung, LG and Sony stand to gain the most from the rapid adoption of smart TVs, which were introduced just 15 months ago. Samsung launched its first smart TV in spring 2010 and now reports that it sells 22,000 connected TVs each day, crossing the two million sale mark earlier this month.
