Unlocking Your iPhone

Apple now offers unlocked iPhones , though the cost is high -- $649 for the 16 GB version (there is no carrier subsidy, so get ready for sticker shock). Even though T-Mobile is getting set to be acquired by AT&T (leaving the U.S. with only one GSM carrier) unlocking is still quite useful if you want to put another SIM card in the phone for use overseas (and don't want to pay high roaming charges). Data use will still be expensive ($10-15 per megabyte in some areas is not unheard of), but if you still use your phone to make actual phone calls and you're a frequent international traveler, it might be better to spring for the unlocked version. (Note to Verizon users: this only applies to GSM users, so you are still out of luck.)
