Instead of suffering with that cramped screen that came with your desktop computer, you, too, can have a screen that lets you display multiple reasonably-sized windows simultaneously, as the market is awash with excellent, reasonably priced computer displays.
The Wize.com site assigns WizeRank ratings (of 0 to 100) to products based on consumer and expert reviews, so we'll use its crowd-sourced computer display rankings, simply starting from the top. All the units, incidentally, could display more than 16 million colors, and had view angles of at least 160 degrees.
All had aspect ratios of about 16:10, meaning that they had wide screens, good for movies and games as well as for opening multiple document windows. (As usual, screen sizes are measured diagonally.)
No. 1: ASUS VH198T – This 19-inch LCD unit with LED backlighting wowed reviewers with its built-in speakers, its high contrast between light and dark (10 million to one), but especially its price, which is about $120. The Wize rating was 99 out of 100, despite the rescreen resolution (1,440 by 900 pixels) being slightly lower than average.
No. 2: AOC 2330V –This 23-inch LCD unit had a contrast of 30,000 to one and a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. The only beef among commentators was the pedestal, which traded thin elegance for sturdiness, but that didn't keep it from getting a Wize rating of 99. Retail price ranges from $150 to $200.
No. 3: ASUS MS238H – With a rating of 97, this 23-inch unit is another example of an LCD display with LED backlighting that achieves a contrast of 10 million to one. The resolution is 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. Commentators liked its distinctive stand—instead of a pedestal, a ring props up the screen from the rear, making tilting easy. The price is about $180.
No. 4: ASUS MS226H – Also earning a WizeRank rating of 97, this 22-inch LCD unit has contrast of 50,000 to one, resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. and an earphone jack. Rather than a pedestal, it is propped up with the previously mentioned ring stand. The price was about $170.
No. 5: ASUS VH236H – Earning a WizeRank rating of 96, this 23-inch LCD boasts a response time of 2 ms to minimize smearing during action games. It has a 20,000 to one contrast and resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, plus built-in speakers. The price is about $180.
No. 6: Dell ST2410 – Earning a WizeRank rating of 95, this 24-inch LCD unit has a non-glare screen, a contrast of 50,000 to one, and a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. Dell's price is $259.99, but it's also available from retailers.
