Move over, Britney and Bieber. There's a new breed of celeb dominating the social media world: Fido.
According to a new study from pet insurance company PetPlan, one in ten pets in the United Kingdom have a Facebook, Twitter or YouTube presence, and more than half of pet owners upload and share pictures of their pets online .
"Animals are more popular than celebrities on Facebook and other social networking sites ," said Neil Brettell, director of insurer PetPlan, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Some have credited a portion of social media's overall success to the massive viral appeal of pet videos posted to sites such as YouTube and Facebook.
Owners have also generated a huge following for their pets by creating platforms for them. For example, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has a dedicated Facebook page for his dog Beast, which has over 145,000 likes on the site.
