In the wake of the death of the HP tablet, a new promotion offers even more evidence of the plight of non-iPad tablets. Best Buy is reportedly offering a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with the purchase of a Samsung TV.
The Wall Street Journal reports that starting this Sunday (Aug. 21), Best Buy will give away Samsung's latest Android tablet to anyone who purchases a 46-inch Samsung 3-D TV , currently priced at $1,500. The promotion lasts for one week.
A Best Buy spokesman told the WSJ that the promotion is aimed at selling TVs, not tablets, but previous reports have indicated that Android tablet supplies are piling up while the iPad is the only tablet selling. HP announced yesterday that it is discontinuing its TouchPad tablet that runs webOS because it did not meet sales goals. In fact, the market seems to be so difficult that HP has no plans to make smartphones or tablets with webOS, which it obtained when the company bought Palm.
This promotion doesn't necessarily bode well for Samsung's tablet either. Even though we found it to be the best Android tablet currently on the market, sales haven't even approached that of the Apple iPad, which sold 28.7 million units since April 2010.
