Only days after officially launching its iPad tablet, Apple has announced it will unveil the next step in mobile computing, the fourth generation of the iPhone operating system, later this week.
The news comes as a bit of a surprise considering that most major iPhone announcements are traditionally made in the summer and Apple is still receiving more attention for the iPad than the iPhone at the moment.
iPhone OS 4 will obviously add additional functionality to the iPhone, but many are wondering how it will affect the iPad , which runs a similar operating system.
The biggest rumored advance in the new OS 4 is multitasking , the ability to run multiple apps at once and switch between them at will, which many users have been clamoring for since the first iPhone debuted.
The unveiling will take place this Thursday, April 8, in a private press conference on the Apple campus in Cupertino, California.
