How much is the perfect cup of coffee worth to you? If you have your very own espresso maker, Turkish coffee pot, and want the latest technology, then VST Inc. has the device for you.
VST made its name building peripherals for Macs, but lately it has been building devices for the beverage industry. First the hardware: the VST Standard Coffee/Espresso Refractometer. This is the same device used in laboratories to measure the concentration of dissolved or suspended chemicals in water. Then there’s the app that goes with it, ExtractMojo. Armed with these, a true coffee enthusiast can get an exact measure of how much coffee flavor is getting extracted into the water and what the percentage of dissolved solids is. VST has charts for what the numbers should be for that ideal cup.
The software works with both Windows machines and Macs, and there’s even an app for iPhones. The app isn’t cheap, at $29.99, nor is the Refractometer, which starts at $399. (For $599 you can get a complete software and hardware bundle).
