Toshiba Excite X10 Hands-On: Thinnest 10-inch Tablet Yet
Like a New Year's resolution, Toshiba's Android tablet is going on a diet. While the Excite X10 has the same 10-inch display as the Thrive tablet, the Excite is just 0.3 inches thick, and weighs just 1.2 pounds. That's about 0.4 pounds lighter and about half an inch thinner than the Thrive. The Thrive will start at $499 and Toshiba says it will go on sale early this year. Read on more more details and check out the full gallery below. This seriously sleek tablet has a 10.1-inch Gorilla Glass display with a resolution of 1280 x 800, and will have an anti-smudge coating to resist fingerprints. The brightness of the display will also automatically adjust depending on lighting conditions. While there was a "Regza" logo on the unit we saw, Toshiba said it will not be on the final production model. The back is made of a magnesium alloy with a brushed metal finish.
Still, the Excite is not wanting for ports. It has a microUSB, microHDMI, and a microSD card slot along one edge. The power and volume buttons lie in a groove that rings the tablet, and were a little hard to press.
Inside, the Excite X10 will be powered by a 1.2-GHz TI OMAP 4430 processor, 1GB of RAM, and will run either Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich. Toshiba also managed to pack in stereo speakers, too.
According to Toshiba, the Excite is not meant to replace the Thrive, but will be sold alongside the company's other tablet.
The Excite X10 will start at $499 for the 16GB model; a 32GB version will also be available when it goes on sale early this year.
