According to research firm Nielsen, 29 percent of people who own smartphones take them while shopping. They are browsing product reviews, for example, or comparing prices they find to the offerings of other stores. (Apps such as RedLaser, ShopSavvy or Amazon Price Check photograph the bar code on a product and look up prices from other vendors.)
Most people want to not only shop but also pay with a phone. In Nielsen's survey, 71 percent of people who download shopping apps said they would be "interested" in apps that take the place of cash or credit cards for making payments.
