Apple Is Now Largest U.S. Phone Maker
A recent sales report from Motorola shows a dip in phone sales. But that's good news for Apple because it officially makes the iPhone maker the largest phone manufacturer in the U.S.
Motorola announced sales information for the last quarter, revealing the company had sold 8.5 million handsets, down from 14.7 million one year ago. Apple, on the other hand, posted record sales in the spring quarter, selling 8.8 million iPhones. That officially knocks Motorola out of its long-held position as the largest U.S. phone maker; it's also a first for Apple.
Apple sold nearly four times as many iPhones as the Motorola DROID, Motorola's flagship Android smartphone and one of the company's most popular handsets at the moment. Despite heavy promotion and relatively good sales, the DROID couldn't come close to competing with iPhone sales.
With nation-wide interest in the new iPhone 4G expected to come out this summer, along with the previously announced iPhone OS 4 update and rumors that the iPhone will be available on the Verizon network , the Apple iPhone shows no signs of slowing down either.
