What do you do when you're stuck waiting in line? You're probably just as likely to pull out your phone and check your Facebook as play "Fruit Ninja" — a big change by smartphone users over last year.
Time spent on social media smartphone apps such as Facebook increased 60 percent compared with last year, while time playing games dropped 4 percent, according to Flurry Analytics. The online research company tracked 110 billion application sessions in the first three months of 2012. Social media and gaming are now tied at an average of 24 minutes of mobile use each day.
Flurry expects casual gamers to be increasingly wooed away from games by more compelling social networking apps. After all, real-life drama can be a lot more interesting than exploding fruit — no matter how you slice it.
