ABC Updates Video Player for iPad 3G
ABC has shown an impressive turnaround time by releasing a revised video playing app for the iPad 3G, just days after owners found the original app didn't stream video over 3G connections.
Many iPad 3G owners were dismayed to find that ABC shows could stream over Wi-Fi connections but not over 3G . ABC explained that the rights for distribution were different for the two networks and ABC had deliberately opted not to stream over 3G.
Now ABC has released a newly approved ABC Player app that will stream over both Wi-Fi and 3G. As per restrictions put in place by Apple , 3G streaming will still be at a lower resolution than Wi-Fi streaming, but at least it's now possible.
UPDATE: ABC contacted TechNewsDaily saying speculation that the lack of 3G streaming was due to rights issues is "inaccurate." ABC pointed to the original statement for the release of the first video app, which said, "business and technology issues would be considered when making a decision regarding offering the app on the 3G version." ABC did not elaborate on what those issues were, but it's likely the technology issues related to the iPad 3G streaming restrictions mentioned above. ABC also said they had a 3G streaming-capable app ready for the launch of the iPad 3G last Friday, however the approval process took longer than expected, delaying the 3G-capable version.
