Most viewers unable to watch the entire 10 minutes of torment.
Crowdfunding is not just for inventors. This week Indiegogo's "Let's Give Karen the Bus Monitor a Vacation" has raised more than $240,000 for the 68-year-old New York resident verbally abused by kids on a school bus.
Karen Huff Klein told reporters all she wants is a simple apology. Already, funds from more than 11,000 donors outraged over Klein's mistreatment total more than 12 years of her salary as a bus monitor in suburban Rochester.
On Monday (June 18), a 10-minute video was posted on YouTube showing Klein keeping her composure as a number of middle-school boys flung insults at her and threatened to break into her house.
The fundraiser was organized by Max Sidorov, who publicized the Indiegogo campaign on Reddit. Sidorov, of Ukraine, came under fire for his effort and was accused by readers of profiting from Klein's misfortune. Originally, funds donated through Indiegogo were linked to a PayPal account in Sidorov's name. He replaced his personal account with one in Klein's name.
The Indiegogo campaign will remain open for another 30 days, until July 20. Unlike Kickstarter, another popular crowdfunding site, Indiegogo does not set a minimum on contributions. Donations to the Klein fundraiser average $20. Donors may choose to reveal their names and donation amounts or remain anonymous.
Currently, donations are climbing by the minute. "I support Karen Klein!!" Lawson posted on the campaign's project page. "Let’s get this into the millions! No one should ever have to endure that."
But the response to Klein is about a lot more than money. It's been a wake-up call. "My Marines and I watched part of the video before work this morning. We couldn’t finish it because it was making us sick with grief, not only for you, but for collective humanity," Radio2 said. "Not joking, next week the words on your purse “Be Remarkable” and “Live With Integrity” are being added to my tattoo collection."
