Download Microsoft Office: Where and How
The majority of computer users who are writing, using spreadsheets and making digital presentations are doing so via Microsoft Office. The current version is available in three varieties for Windows operating systems and two for Macs. Each is tailored to the software's specific use.
For Windows, Office Home and Student, Office Home and Business and Office Professional all include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote software. Both the Home and Business and Professional versions include Outlook, with Office Processional also featuring Publisher and Access.
For Macs, only Office Home and Student or Office Home and Business are available. Microsoft has been offering its Office software since 1989, when it was first introduced for Macs and only included Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The software was made available for Windows computers one year later.
Where to Download Microsoft Office
The Microsoft Store or a retailer you recognize are the most trusted places to download the newest version of Microsoft Office for both Windows and Macs. Purchasing from the Microsoft Store or a reputable 3rd party retailer ensures users are getting malware-free software and also provides users with the option to reload their software should their computer crash.
Downloading Microsoft Office
When purchasing through the Microsoft Store, you can download by clicking the "Download Now" button on the order Thank You page. By clicking "Download Now," you are given the option to "Run" or "Save." Selecting "Run" will download the software and automatically start the installation. By selecting "Save," you can save the file to your computer and then click on the file to install the software at your convenience. Once the software is installed, you must enter a 25-character product key, included on the Microsoft order form, before using it.
To download Microsoft Office, ensure your computer meets the software's minimum requirements. Windows computers must have at least a 500 MHz processor, 256 MB of RAM and 1.5 GB of available hardware space.
Mac computers must have an Intel processor, 1 GB of RAM and 2.5 GB of available hard disk space.
Depending on Internet speed, downloading Microsoft Office can take anywhere from 15 to 135 minutes.
While there are websites featuring Microsoft Office for free, a recent study by market intelligence firm IDC revealed numerous reasons why consumers should steer clear. The research found that 25 percent of the websites that offer free versions also serve up counterfeit product keys, pirated software, key generators or crack tools attempted to install either malicious or potentially unwanted software.
