More and more people are going online to keep up with sports — likely in part because of this year's Olympics.
Though TV remains the most popular medium for sports, online interest is growing, according to data from Internet research firm comScore. It found, for example, that the number of people visiting sports-related Web sites shot up by about a fifth (23 percent) this past June in comparison to June 2011. Even before the games, interest was high, with 143 million people around the globe watching nearly 20 sports videos in June.
And male-female stereotypes seem to hold. Men are 11 percent more likely than average Internet users to visit sports-related sites, while women are 13 percent less likely. Men spend more time on the sites as well, at nearly an hour on average. Women visitors spent 28 minutes.
