Acer to Unveil Chrome OS Devices in June
It's been a while since any solid news about Google's Chrome OS has turned up. Same goes for Acer tablets. Now the two topics have collided in news that Acer plans to announce several Chrome OS devices in just a few weeks.
VentureBeat has confirmed with multiple sources that computer manufacturer Acer will be bringing Chrome OS devices to the Computex Taipei convention, taking place June 1-5. This is especially interesting considering that it means Chrome OS will be out sooner than expected. Previously, the only information on a release date was "sometime in the second half of the year."
It's unclear if these Chrome OS devices will be the Acer tablets that have been rumored for some time . VentureBeat correctly notes that Google's Android operating system for smartphones would be far better suited for tablets , while Chrome OS is more useful for netbooks. Chrome OS uses a browser to connect to the Internet and perform tasks on Web apps instead of using software installed on the device. To further confuse matters, Acer has also said it would produce Android netbooks in the past.
Whatever kind of device Acer unveils next month, the most interesting thing will likely not be the form factor of the device, but how well Chrome OS is accepted as an operating system, especially when Android has already gained so much favor.
