Amazon Making Kindle App for Android
Amazon has officially announced it will release a version of its Kindle e-book reader app for the Android smartphone operating system.
The Android app store has traditionally lagged behind the iPhone App Store in terms of content. This is no exception. Amazon has had a Kindle e-book reader app for iPhone and iPod Touch for quite some time, and even had an iPad app ready for the device's launch.
The Kindle app for Android will function similarly to other Kindle apps. It will allow users to download and read Kindle e-books, which number over half a million now, and sync their book collections and bookmarks across multiple devices. Kindle apps have already been available for PCs, Macs, and BlackBerry smartphones and the aforementioned Apple products.
This move makes sense for Amazon because its clear the company wants to expand e-book sales beyond the dedicated Kindle device , which is why Amazon has released Kindle apps for other devices. Now that Android has become one of the most-used smartphone operating systems , an Android Kindle app can help Amazon capitalize on an even larger audience.
In the announcement, Amazon confirmed its Android app would be free (all Kindle apps are) and would be available sometime this summer.
