Best Buy Launching CinemaNow Movie Download Store
Electronics retailer Best Buy has been slowly expanding beyond electronics sales. The latest step in the company's progression is an online movie download store to be called CinemaNow.
Best Buy announced yesterday that it would launch its movie store under the CineamaNow brand and offer movie titles for rental or purchase beginning this month.
The service will not be selling DVDs, though. The CinemaNow store will sell or rent digital downloads to internet connected devices.
"This service, which complements our existing suite of digital entertainment brands, will be available to customers in their homes and on-the-go through a broad array of devices," said Chris Homeister, senior vice president of entertainment for Best Buy.
Starting this month, LG Blu-ray players will get the CinemaNow download service , followed by home theater in a box systems, Samsung's home theater products and Best Buy's own brand of home theater equipment, Insignia.
CinemaNow will have movies ready to be bought and downloaded as soon as they are released to DVD. It will cost $2.99 to $3.99 to rent a movie and $9.99 to $19.99 to buy one. CinemaNow will have new releases available in high definition, but only some will be available in full 1080p resolution.
