The huge number of new electronic gadgets used by the average America now eat up enough power to all but offset decades of advances in energy efficiency. Computers in sleep mode, charging cellphones and other devices performing no task in particular use up entire power plants worth of energy. In fact, 5-10 percent of all electricity use in the U.S. goes to gadgets in stand-by mode .
