Terrorists may have manually flown hijacked passenger planes into the World Trade Towers on 9/11, but the U.S. military's subsequent invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq relied increasingly upon robotic planes to carry cameras, sensors and weapons for targeting enemies on the ground. The rise of the drones over the past decade has led to a swarm of large and small drones over the modern day battlefield.

Drones have become a mainstay weapon for counterterrorism and on the battlefield since 9/11.
