A decade of war in Afghanistan and Iraq led to a deadly arms race between U.S. military forces and insurgents over improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The roadside bombs, ranging from simple to sophisticated, have been responsible for the most U.S. military casualties over time.
IEDs have caused the most U.S. military casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan since 9/11.
