Miley Cyrus is the latest celebrity to become bait for Facebook spammers looking to trick people into divulging sensitive personal information.
The online security firm Sophos has noticed a spam campaign making its way around Facebook that promises to show a picture of the teen sensation doing something scandalous. The message comes from a user's Facebook friend and has the title, SICK! I lost all respect for Miley Cyrus when I saw this photo.
Clicking on the URL directs traffic to a page that shows the word Respect circled and crossed out in red, like a street sign. Further pursuing the allegedly illicit shot of Miley will lead users to a page requesting permission to access the account holder's account information.
By this point, it's the hope of security experts that users will notice something is amiss, but if the urge to see Miley Cyrus in a compromising photo is too overpowering and users continue following the fraudulent messages, they will ultimately be asked to fill out a survey, which generates money for the scammers.
And in the end, as witnessed in recent Facebook campaigns advertising everyone from Michael Jackson to Harry Potter , there is no photo.
